My mother loved the actress Leslie Caron ("Gigi"), so when her daughter was born, she wanted to name her Leslie. Dad agreed.
My name was always pronounced "Less-lee." When I reached high school, I discovered that boys could be named Leslie, too. Lucky me had one in all of my classes, and he sat behind me. Very confusing, so the teacher informed me that the female version of my name was pronounced "Lez-lee." Who knew I'd been mispronouncing my name all my life?
I hated "Lez-lee." I envisioned Gloria Swanson gliding down a staircase, drawling, "Lez-lee, dahling."
I had to nip this in the bud.
Since I was an imaginative child, I started telling people I'd been named after Leslie Howard of "Scarlet Pimpernel" fame. And he pronounced his name "Less-lee."
